Zaha Hadid together with six other architects have been invited to reinterpret Arne Jacobsen’s Fritz Hansen timeless Series 7™ chair to celebrate its 60th year in production.

‘The Seven chair has a timeless and distinctive silhouette, which has proven versatile in the number of ways its base can be modified. We wanted to address this relationship by designing a base which integrates the shell and legs as single, unified entity,’ explains Zaha Hadid

Undulating continuous steel rods support the iconic plywood seat and backrest, then reach down to the ground as legs of the chair; assimilating the structure and seat of the chair that are considered disparate elements within the original design.

The seven reinterpreted chairs are exhibited at the Design Museum Gent until 13 September before travelling to London and Tokyo.

After exhibition, the chairs will be sold at auction in aid of Unicef. Working in more than 190 countries around the world, Unicef ensures more of the world’s children are fed, vaccinated, educated and protected than any other organisation.
