Exhibition at the AIT ArchitekturSalon, Cologne, Germany
January 16 – March 8, 2012

Since 1980, Zaha Hadid Architects has realized more than thirty projects around the world. The intellectual foundation for this work has been the remarkable architectural theoretical research of Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher. Over the course of this year, the AIT ArchitekturSalon will exclusively feature an intriguing selection of projects by Zaha Hadid Architects. Models, paintings and multimedia presentations illustrate a new high-rise typology inspired by the concepts and ambitions of parametrism–architecure’s response to the dynamism and complexity of the post-fordist network society. Catering to all scales, the studies explore the variety of work and experimentation of the practice; from smaller scale design objects to the largest urban planning concepts. This series of exhibitions, lectures and workshops begins at the AIT ArchitekturSalon Köln.

Opened on 21 June 2011, the Riverside Museum, Glasgow by Zaha Hadid Architects welcomed its one millionth visitor on 31 November 2011.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Riverside Museum has been a huge hit since the day it opened to the public. We knew just how much visitors loved the old Museum of Transport at Kelvin Hall but even so, the reaction to the Riverside Museum has been phenomenal. The feedback from people has been overwhelmingly positive and we are already seeing visitors returning time and again to enjoy Glasgow’s latest attraction.”

“It is wonderful to see that the new museum has captured everyone’s imagination,” said Zaha Hadid. “Such passion for innovation and discovery from all members of the community is very exciting.”

The Riverside Museum’s design is derived from its context. Located where the River Kelvin joins the Clyde, the design flows from the city to the river; symbolizing a dynamic relationship where the museum is the transition from one to the other. The design is a sectional extrusion, open at opposing ends along a diverted linear path, allowing the museum to position itself as a third river flowing through one of the city’s most historic locations.

The museum is home to the transport, engineering and shipbuilding legacy that made Glasgow the ‘Second City of the Empire’. Hadid’s first major public commission to open in the UK and housing more than 3,000 exhibits, the museum reveals the rich and varied stories of Glasgow’s great achievements, vibrant spirit and technological breakthroughs.

“The history of Glasgow is profoundly interlinked with the history of the River Clyde and together they have informed the museum’s design,” explains Hadid. “Through architecture, we can investigate future possibilities yet also explore the cultural foundations that have defined the city. The Riverside Museum is truly unique project where the exhibits and building come together at this prominent location on the Clyde to engage and inspire all visitors.

“The fluid design continues Glasgow’s rich engineering traditions; a true demonstration and celebration of the skills and passion of local engineers and contractors who helped to bring this building to life. The Riverside Museum rises from Glasgow’s great industrial past to become an integral element of the modern city which is embracing its future.”

The Riverside Museum opened on 21 June. It has been funded by Glasgow City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Riverside Museum Appeal.

Read the BBC article here

“I’ve always been fascinated by parking garages,” said Zaha Hadid. “For a long time, I’ve been researching how to bring the street into a building and make that into an urban space. Our preliminary sketches explored what a parking garage can become by simply manipulating the building components inherent to the building type. These sketches progressed naturally into an expressed, continuous vehicular circulation path which suits its purpose, yet provides a unique experience and even a degree of fun for the user; a reflection of the city’s aspirations to create an environment that looks beyond established utilitarian conventions.”

Until March 25th, 2012
Combining architecture and design, Zaha Hadid: Form in Motion at the Philadelphia Museum of Art displays an undulating environment based on curvilinear geometries. Exploiting a formal language of fluid movement, Hadid’s exhibition design emphasizes the continuous nature of her work, and how the fields of architecture, urbanism, and design are closely interrelated in her practice.

“Hadid envisions the gallery as an active element in the display of her own designs, and will create an immersive three-dimensional environment,” said Kathryn Bloom Hiesinger, Curator. “She is interested in the interface between architecture, landscape, and geology, and explores the intersection of these elements with a spatial composition that ebbs and flows in wave-like movements, manipulating the viewer’s understanding of space with constantly shifting perspectives.”

For further information and videos of the exhibition please visit: www.philamuseum.org/exhibitions/750.html
Philadelphia Museum of Art, Exhibition Gallery, Perelman Building, Fairmount and Pennsylvania Avenues, Philadelphia, PA 19130, USA

Zaha Hadid Architects and Roca announce the opening of the Roca London Gallery. The design takes inspiration from the power of water as a transforming element to carve a sequence of dynamic, porous spaces for the 1100m2 gallery. The flowing white central axis of the gallery leads to a number of smaller, semi-enclosed spaces in concrete. Fissures and slices in the walls give permeability throughout the gallery. This design theme of water extends to the façade, which appears as a set of ripples in movement across the exterior. The interior features audio-visual equipment allowing visitors to discover the company’s history, its landmark achievements and the values on which all of Roca’s work is based: the commitment to sustainability and particularly to innovation, design, wellness and saving water. Designed to be much more than just a display space, the Roca London Gallery will host exhibitions, meetings, presentations, seminars and debates.
Press release, descriptive texts, drawings and high resolution photography for publication without fee can be downloaded using the link:
ftp://ZahaPress01:Ja6wuz8S4f@ftp.zaha-hadid.com/array1/ZahaPress01/ZHA_Roca_London_Gallery

In an unexpected departure from the script for the evening Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton, London, won the highest accolade at the 2011 RIBA Stirling Prize award dinner making it two wins in a row for ZHA.

The Stirling Prize jury commented: Evelyn Grace had a complex brief: four schools under a single academy umbrella and the consequent dichotomy of having to express both independence and unity. Curiously for a school whose speciality is sport, the site lacks any opportunity for significant outdoor sport but the architects have responded with guile and intelligence. The project is distinguished by its planning not its form of expression; its saltire plan solving the multiple demands of site and usage in a manner that seems effortless. Internally the academy is a functional modern school, with occasional spatial moments as reminders that this is real architecture, though not in any way at the expense of utility or value. And it makes kids run to get into school in the morning – what free school is going to do that?

Peter Walker, the Academy’s principal said, “This visually stunning building makes a powerful statement to our students every day they attend school. As a new academy setting the highest expectations for all students, it is fitting that we have such an aspirational environment. The internal structure of the building supports the innovative nature of Evelyn Grace Academy’s small school system exceptionally well.”

Opened on 21 June this year, the Riverside Museum, Glasgow by Zaha Hadid Architects has welcomed over half a million visitors.

The visitors who tipped the museum over the 500,000 mark on August 11 were the Kerr family. Mr Kerr said: “My dad worked in the yards at Yarrows and I would have loved to have shown him round here. It is a fantastic building and they have done a great job. I have been to the old museums at Kelvin Hall and Albert Drive but this building is something else. We really enjoyed our visit.”

At the opening of the museum Councillor Matheson said: “Glasgow’s history as an industrial giant, a global leader in engineering and shipbuilding, is celebrated in an architectural masterpiece which shows that we remain at the cutting edge of design and technology. On the same spot where ships and paddle steamers were built, the launch of the Riverside Museum is an occasion which both Glasgow and Scotland can be proud of. While we celebrate our past, we are determined to look to the future. Indeed, now there are more people working in Glasgow in culture and tourism than ever worked in the shipyards even at their height. Glasgow is a city transformed, from post industrial wasteland, to a global destination for culture and sport.”

Lord Smith of Kelvin, Chair of the Riverside Museum Appeal said: “I want to thank the trustees, our patrons, companies, trusts and the many thousands of individuals who have all contributed to this outstanding celebration of Glasgow’s great industrial and engineering history. Every penny raised by the appeal has been spent on creating what is becoming one of the UK’s leading visitor attractions, but more importantly, a place where children can be inspired by the skills and talents which made Glasgow a global great.”

The Riverside Museum opened on 21 June. It has been funded by Glasgow City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Riverside Museum Appeal.

The final of the six main Olympic Park venues to reach this milestone, the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic Games, was completed this week.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chairman John Armitt said: ‘The Aquatics Centre will be a fantastic gateway to the Games in 2012 and a much-needed new community and elite sporting venue for the capital afterwards. Five years ago, in July 2006, we published a delivery timetable which set out the ambitious target to complete the main venues a year before the Games. Today, with the completion of the sixth main permanent venue, I am proud to say that we have delivered on that commitment.

Construction started on the Zaha Hadid-designed Aquatics Centre just over three years ago in June 2008 and has been completed on time and with an exemplary safety record.
