Ves-el collaboration with Gareth Neal joint-winner of the Wood Awards 2015: Bespoke Furniture category

The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier competition for excellence in architecture and product design in wood. The Awards aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation using wood. The Awards have had an impact on the architectural and design landscape, becoming a ‘mark of excellence’ in wood. The 2015 judges include Hugh Pearman, Editor of RIBA Journal and Max Fraser, Editor of the London Design Guide.

Initiated by the American Hardwood Export Council and Benchmark Furniture, the Ves-el is a collaboration between Gareth Neal and Zaha Hadid for water carafes. Each piece explores the relationship between the hand-crafted and the mechanical processes of design and fabrication with the 3D modelling used by Zaha Hadid Architects. Neal extruded the form along one of its axes with a slit opening at the end that allowed the viewer to within. The vessels were made in two parts on a CNC machine at Benchmark Furniture.
