Five ZHA/ZHD projects nominated for ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards

ArchDaily has nominated five projects from ZHA/ZHD to compete for the 10th edition of its Building of the Year Award (BOTY): The billboard for JCDecaux in the Small Scale Architecture category; Napoli Afragola High Speed Train Station in the Public Architecture category; Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre in the Cultural Architecture; the Morpheus Hotel in the Hospitality Architecture category; and Generali Tower in Offices.

The billboard was named ‘Best Original Digital Billboard’ at The Digital Outdoor Advertising (DOOH) Awards. Zaha Hadid Design redefined the design language of billboards – providing a unique communications channel that integrates contemporary design and digital media.

The BBC described the Napoli Afragola high Speed Train Station as one of the world’s best buildings to open in 2017: “This striking new station for Italy’s expanding high-speed rail network writhes up and over eight railway tracks... It is both a spectacular, snake-like bridge expressing the dynamism of Italy’s 300kph railways and their equally serpentine trains and a main-line station with haunting views of Mount Vesuvius.” The project was also awarded ‘Best Transportation Project’ at the Surface Travel Awards.

TIME Magazine listed Morpheus Hotel as one of the World’s Greatest Places based on key factors, including quality, originality, innovation, sustainability and influence. Morpheus Hotel, also received three ‘Awards for Excellence’ from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), while Popular Science Magazine included the hotel in their list ‘Best of What New 2018’.

The Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre has also received four ‘Awards for Excellence’ 2019 from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Including the new Jumeirah Nanjing  Hotel, the centre harnessed the energy of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games to create a project with a lasting legacy that has enhanced and also regenerated its setting - acting as both an anchor and a catalyst for future investment in Nanjing’s Hexi New Town.

Experiencing an exciting renaissance over recent years with enlightened patrons of the city’s art, fashion and architecture, Milan has received the Wallpaper* Design Award for Best City, listing the new Generali Tower’s contribution to an evolving cityscape that combines Milan’s traditional grandeur with a contemporary architectural language. The Generali Tower was also honoured by the Emporis Skyscraper Awards, considered the world's most renowned prize for high-rise architecture. Placing second, Generali Tower was praised by the jury for the highest standards of energy efficiency receiving LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council.

During the nomination period, readers will be able to register and vote to establish the shortlist for ArchDaily’s Best Of The Year Awards. Voting is open for the next 2 weeks.
