Beijing Daxing International Airport PKX opens 30 September

With Beijing’s existing airport at capacity, construction of the new Beijing Daxing International Airport began in 2016 and is now completed in preparation to open on 30 September this year. The airport will serve 72 million passengers per year by 2025 (630,000 flights/year on 4 runways) and is designed for expansion to serve 100 million passengers and 4 million tonnes of cargo annually on 880,000 flights/year (300 take-offs/landings an hour). The new terminal with rail transportation centre is designed to be extremely user-focussed, efficient and adaptable for future growth; its 6-pier radial design gives exceptional convenience for passengers and flexibility in operations. Flowing parabolic folds within the terminal’s vaulted roof reach to the ground to support the structure and allow natural light within, directing all passengers to the central courtyard. Echoing principles within traditional Chinese architecture that organise interconnected spaces around a central courtyard, the new terminal’s design guides all passengers seamlessly through the relevant departure, arrival or transfer zones towards the grand courtyard at its centre – a multi-layered meeting space at the very heart of the terminal. It’s compact, radial design minimises distances between check-in and gate, as well as minimising distances between gates for transferring passengers. Every aircraft pier radiates from the terminal’s main central court where all passenger services & amenities are located. The airport includes 100% rainwater collection and a solar farm to harvest energy. A fully-integrated transport hub for the Beijing Tianjin corridor and southern Hebei Province, the airport will offer express trains to city centres and direct connections to regional rail services as well as the national high-speed network. Following the 2011 international competition, in January 2014 the Beijing New Airport Headquarters (BNAH) created a Joint Design Team bringing together ADP Ingeniérie (ADPI) and Zaha Hadid Architects’ group to collaborate on the optimised design, working with BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architecture & Design) and CACC (China Airport Construction Company) to deliver the project under the leadership of BNAH.
