Field of Towers Chess Set auctioned in support of Maggie’s Centres

Organised by Christie’s, the ‘Art for Maggie's’ online auction opens today until 23 July 2020 with proceeds supporting Maggie’s Centres. The auction features donated artworks by leading artists, designers and architects including Zaha Hadid, Bridget Riley, Frank Auerbach, Luc Tuymans, Antony Gormley, David Bailey and Nadav Kander.

Maggie’s is a fantastic charity close to our hearts – providing free practical and emotional support for people living with cancer; championing quality architecture in their centres across the UK and abroad. Offering support from cancer support specialists, counselling psychologists and advisers, Maggie’s Centres are places where professional staff and qualified experts are on hand to offer the support people need in a welcoming environment.

Programmes at Maggie’s include men’s groups, teenage groups and support for children whose parents have cancer. Other sessions include relaxation, tai chi, art therapy, expressive writing and nutrition workshops. Maggie’s programmes for family and friends also help people support loved ones at all stages of treatment.

The Field of Towers chess set by Zaha Hadid Design is a formal exploration of the development and research within Zaha Hadid’s designs for high-rise architecture.

Maggie’s Fife designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in Kirkcaldy, Scotland opened in 2006 and has supported almost 70,000 people affected by cancer.

Zaha Hadid explained at the opening of Maggie’s Fife: “Anybody who knew Maggie Keswick Jencks felt at home in her presence. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel special by giving them the time and space to express and be themselves. It was important that this unique quality was in some way translated into the design for Maggie’s Fife. We shared an understanding of how significantly environments can help enhance personal wellbeing.”
