Mouzhan Majidi elevated to AIA College of Fellows

Mouzhan Majidi, Zaha Hadid Architects’ Chief Executive, has been elevated to the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) College of Fellows.

AIA Fellows are recognized with the AIA’s highest membership honour for their exceptional work and contributions to the profession and society. Founded in 1952, only 3 percent of AIA members are awarded the distinction.

Mouzhan’s designs, leadership and passion for diversity have made a real difference in the profession; establishing new benchmarks in design innovation, user-experience and sustainability that enhance the quality of life for over 500 million people globally. Creating architecture that has won over 250 international awards and 80 design competitions, he has been recognized as an outstanding designer and architect with 35 years of pioneering research in the widest diversity of civic and commercial projects.

Serving as Chief Executive of two extremely diverse practices, Mouzhan has guided some of the world’s most creative talent to realize transformational architecture across six continents; setting the foundations of an effective organization and management structure to embrace new ideas and technologies. His leadership has delivered a repertoire of projects that advance the quality of our built environment.

Joining Foster + Partners in 1987, Mouzhan rose to become Chief Executive in 2007. He led the practice during one of the most fundamental changes in its corporate structure and established a long term strategic plan leading to remarkable international growth and the return of ownership to its staff; creating a truly global and diversified business built on a strong culture and partnership model that developed a leading reputation for its fully integrated approach.

As an architect taking on the role of CEO of Foster + Partners, Mouzhan prioritized design excellence through an integrated approach with the investment in new specialist staff, including the purchase of an engineering company, to combine the highest quality of architectural services with new disciplines and technologies in engineering, project management, interior design, environmental design and workplace consultancy.

Appointed by consecutive British Prime Ministers as a UK Business Ambassador, Mouzhan represented the UK Government and construction industry promoting design excellence and sustainability worldwide.

Redefining the development of airports, Mouzhan’s experience in this sector began at Stansted in 1987. Each subsequent design for Hong Kong, Beijing Capital, Amman, Beijing Daxing, Navi Mumbai and Western Sydney sets new standards for global aviation, becoming more energy efficient, environmentally discreet, technologically advanced and simple to use.

Joining Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) in 2015, Mouzhan continued this multidisciplinary approach, championing research in robotics, 3D-printing, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, data and environmental analysis.

Cultivating the skills and diversity that drives ZHA’s decision-making and enriches the built environments we create, Mouzhan has worked to remove barriers that prevent everyone from realising their ambitions in architecture, establishing programmes that enable all talents to grow and progress regardless of gender, race, background or identity.

With almost 500 global staff, ZHA is currently delivering more than 60 projects in 27 countries – a record number for the practice; capturing imaginations around the world in our work marrying innovative design solutions with ecologically sound materials and sustainable construction practices.
