Two projects by ZHA win Green Building Awards 2021

Two projects by Zaha Hadid Architects located in Hong Kong, China, have won the 2021 Green Building Awards: The Henderson in the ‘Commercial projects under construction’ category and the Jockey Club i-Village in the ‘Residential projects under construction category’

The biennial Green Building Award 2021 (GBA 2021), is co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) and award aims to recognise building-related projects and organisations with outstanding performance and contributions to sustainable built environment while advocates wider adoption of green building practices throughout a building’s life-cycle.

Replacing a multi-storey car park, The Henderson at 2 Murray Road’s design creates an urban oasis adjacent to Chater Garden between Central and Admiralty MTR stations. Sheltering new civic plazas enveloped by nature, the 36-storey design reinterprets the structural forms and layering of a Bauhinia bud about to blossom. Known as the Hong Kong orchid tree, the ‘Bauhinia x blakeana’ was first propagated in the city’s botanic gardens above the Murray Road site and its flowering bud features on Hong Kong’s flag.

A high-tensile steel structure provides naturally lit, column-free, Grade A office space with a 5 metre floor-to-floor height giving maximum flexibility and views of the city.

Accommodating new patterns of working with enhanced workplace flexibility, the building’s smart management system creates a contactless pathway for all occupants from the street to their workstation. The tower’s Sky Garden is an outdoor recreational space with running track and an aquaponics planting network that acts as an effective biological air-purifying filter by consuming contaminants. The rooftop banqueting hall offers panoramic views of the city’s skyline.

The design has achieved LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum pre-certification together with the highest 3-Star rating of China’s Green Building Rating Program. Construction of the tower began in 2019 with its procurement targeting embodied carbon reductions and the use of recycled materials.

The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology’s new halls of residence, Jockey Club i-Village are designed by ZHA in collaboration with Leigh & Orange. Combining advanced digital design with sustainable construction practices and operational strategies for its 50-year life cycle, the design is guided by the university’s mission to harness technology and innovation to solve today’s critical global issues.

In the southeast of the campus, the new halls of residence are embedded within a steeply sloping site, its roof being the primary circulation that incorporates shaded outdoor areas for students & staff to gather together. This rooftop walkway creates a new connection between the academic blocks of the north campus and the residential blocks to the south, eliminating the need to circumnavigate hilly terrain.

Digital design tools allowing simultaneous considerations of site parameters including terrain levels, solar radiation, sightlines and soil conditions have defined the design’s optimal configuration and orientation. The halls’ environmental systems are integrated within the university’s centralised network that offsets daytime energy demand in the academic buildings with evening demand in the residential. Photovoltaic arrays will harvest renewable energy to meet the university’s commitment to transform its campus to carbon-neutral operations.
