Zaha Hadid Architects interdisciplinary team shortlisted in design competition for new music theatre in Griegkvartalet, Norway

Zaha Hadid Architects, along with A-lab and Sweco Architects together with Tyrens Sweden, AKT II, Hilson Moran Partnership, and Tevas have been shortlisted in the competition to design the new music theatre in Griegkvartalet, Norway.

"We are honoured to be shortlisted to design this landmark project," said Ludovico Lombardi, Zaha Hadid Architects’ Project Director. “Our team's primary objective is to deliver a design that pays homage to the cultural significance of the existing structure while defining an architectural identity in its own right. We envision a design that engages with the city’s urban fabric to welcome visitors throughout each day and evening, creating a new meeting space for everyone offering a wide range of activities for all age groups and transforming Griegkvartalet into the vibrant cultural centre of Bergen. We look forward to working with the client, community and all local partners on a design that will enrich Norway's cultural tapestry”.

The new music theatre and concert hall, situated at Edvard Griegs plass within Griegkvartalet, will serve as a unique cultural powerhouse for Bergen and Western Norway, fostering unity and providing an ideal space for local, national and international productions of opera, musical theatre, ballet, dance, concerts, and conferences. With an increasing demand for capacity in Grieghallen, the expansion of the music theatre will enable larger-scale productions.

The revitalisation of Bergen Opera House is a unique opportunity to create a transformative public space for the city that captivates audiences, showcases artistic excellence, and enhances the local community's cultural creation and experience.
