ON-SITE: First aircraft lands at Navi Mumbai International Airport

An Airbus C295 of the Indian Air Force became the first aircraft to test landing on the new Navi Mumbai International Airport runway.

Construction works at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) progress towards its completion and the start of passenger operations in 2025.

Easing congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport which operates at capacity, Navi Mumbai is being developed in phases with the first passenger terminal (in addition to general aviation & cargo terminals) opening next year to serve 20 million passengers a year.

Meeting the region’s record growth in demand for air travel, the compact layout of three interconnecting terminals of Navi Mumbai has been designed by ZHA to serve to 90 million annual passengers when all phases are complete. The organic forms and curvature of the terminals’ columns and roofs are informed by Lotus blossom, the national flower of India prominent throughout the country’s ancient art, architecture and literature.

With its two parallel runways, Navi Mumbai International Airport has also been designed as a multi-modal transport hub and interchange with local, regional and national rail networks, the airport will be served by the Navi Mubai Metro Line 1, as well as the planned Mumbai Metro Line 8 and Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Line that are currently in development.
