Z-Play

Each modular Z-Play unit consists of a pair of versatile, interconnecting stools with a variety of possible configurations. Drawing on the formal language of the Z-Scapeseries for Sawaya & Moroni, the pieces are similarly derived from a single, rectilinear block, intersected along diagonal seams at its core.

As the name suggests, the furniture is intended for play. The pieces are designed to be clustered and manipulated – they can be pulled apart, tilted, turned upside down, lined up to create interior landscapes, placed back-to-back as armchairs or reconnected to form simple, solid blocks that conceal the canyon-like surfaces within. Multiplied further, they can form large-scale geometric patterns, exploiting the dynamic interplay of solidity and void, unity and opposition. To emphasise their playful nature, the stools invite use with a tactile materials palette of fabric, leather or pony skin.
