Z-Scape is a compact ensemble of lounge furniture, whose forms derive from the geological formations of glaciers and natural erosion. Each piece is a fragment, split along the diagonal veins of a 5 by 2.5 metre ‘lounging box’. The edges of this mass define the hard, flat surfaces of tables, bar counters or shelving, while the soft interior is moulded into comfortable seating.

The different elements are loosely shaped by the more prosaic demands of type, function and ergonomics, but these influences remain secondary to the overriding language of the splintered forms. Instead of prescribing patterns of use, the project offers a degree of indeterminacy and freedom uncommon in conventional furniture design. Together, the 11 fragments function like a jigsaw puzzle, which can be taken apart and reconfigured, and four of its pieces have been developed as full-size prototypes: Glacier and Moraine, a pair of sofas in monolith upholstered foam; and two wooden tables, Stalactite and Stalagmite.
