Fornebuporten Metro Station

  • Oslo, Norway
  • 7000 m2m2
  • 2018

Fornebuporten Station design proposes a unique experience of an artificial sky under ground: the “Skybelow”.

Projected content, illuminating cladding system that envelopes the whole station hall, is generated on the basis of real time weather data from locations around the world, offering immersive experience of a sky under ground.

If it snows above ground, here it is sunny. If it’s still dark above ground, here the sun already rises.

A synthesis of digital content, custom luminaires with calibrated lenses with bespoke 3d-perforated panels generates an environment that mimics highly realistic weather atmospheres.

Every time users enter the station, the Skybelow is different, constantly evolving, like a weather system.

By extending the day-light hours travelers experience, the space energizes users, with lasting effect and significant positive impact on local community well-being.

Zaha Hadid Architects and A_Lab have won the architectural competition to design the Fornbuporten and Fornebu Senter stations, two of the six stations planned for the new Fornebubanen metro line in Oslo.

The Fornebuporten station key design idea is to offer an unexpected and energizing experience of artificial sky under ground: the “Skybelow”.

Above ground, one entrance sits within an existing office complex while the other is situated in a park. These two distinct characters are reflected in the architectonic language as a Square and Circle. Square entrance key feature is a kaleidoscopic ceiling that comprises of an assembly of dichroic glass and mirrors, and offers a dynamic effect of a pixelated sky with infinite horizon. The colour is constantly changing depending on the angle from which its perceived. Circle entrance key feature is a Circular stainless steel canopy above ground that extends its trajectory as a helix spiral around a system of ramps and stairs. This movement leads passengers towards the submerged entrance lobby with elevators and keeps the park unobstructed.

Under ground the two shapes morph through a transition along the length of the platform. Each of the platform ends offers a very different identity, in line with the entrances above ground. The platform is enveloped in a stainless steel cladding system that comprises of 600 perforated panels that are changing their shape from circular to square. Each panel is illuminated with its own dedicated spotlight, embedded within the three linear Lightbars suspended below the cladding. This way the cladding serves as a canvas upon which the projected light paints different weather atmospheres. These are ever changing. The station hall mood is never the same.
