Located on a narrow strait, separating continental Italy from Sicily, the Regium Waterfront marks the city of Reggio Calabria as a Mediterranean cultural capital. Drawing inspiration from the radial symmetry of the starfish, the structure, housing museum and performing arts centre, stands as a beacon visible from land and sea.

Two new buildings by Zaha Hadid Architects – museum and centre for performing arts – define the city of Reggio Calabria as a Mediterranean cultural capital.

Located on a narrow strait, separating continental Italy from the island of Sicily, these two unique structures stand as a beacon, visible from both the sea and the distant Sicilian coastline.

The museum draws inspiration from the organic form of the starfish, utilizing a radial symmetry to coordinate communication and circulation between different program elements – exhibition spaces, restoration facilities, archive, aquarium and library.

A second, multifunctional building comprises two separate elements, placed around a partially covered piazza. Here, offices, gymnasium, craft laboratories, cinema and flexible auditoria are contained.
