MAXXI Voted World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival

Barcelona, Spain

The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome by Zaha Hadid Architects was voted the World Building of the Year at the 2010 World Architecture Festival in Barcelona earlier this month. The WAF World Building of the Year follows the MAXXI winning the RIBA Stirling Prize in October. The judges described the building as ‘a volume that takes its place in a very happy way in the volume of the city. It is like an unwound Guggenheim, with ribbons of connective space. It is a building that will still be talked about in the history of architecture in 50 years time.’

‘It is very nice to feel that after so many years of very hard work it has been recognised’ said the project director Gianluca Racana, described designing a museum for contemporary art as a dream project. ‘It is open ended,’ he said. ‘The building is an incubator for a new art form. It is very seductive.’
