Two projects by ZHA win London Design Awards 2020

Two projects by Zaha Hadid Architects have won Gold at the London Design Awards 2020; Changsha Meixihu International Culture and Art Centre in the ‘Architecture - Public and Institutional – International’ category & Forest Green Rovers Eco Park Stadium in the ‘Architecture – Proposed’ category.

The London Design Awards by the Driven X Design Awards program celebrates innovation and creativity, and how extraordinary design leads the way to creating new possibilities.

Ecopark Stadium will be the new home of Forest Green Rovers Football Club with important new facilities for its local community. Forest Green Rovers has established a holistic vision for the site to retain its pastoral qualities whilst adding new amenities for the town. Embodying low carbon construction methods and operational processes, it will be the first all wood football stadium - with almost every element made of sustainably sourced timber. As a building material, laminated timber is highly durable, safe, recyclable and beautiful.

With the team’s community and supporters at its core, fans will be as close as five meters from the pitch. The stadium’s continuous spectator bowl will maximise matchday atmosphere. The stadium’s design incorporates the club’s future growth. Forest Green Rovers’ Ecopark Stadium aims to be carbon neutral (or even carbon negative with the provision of on-site renewable energy generation) - demonstrating sustainable architecture can be dynamic and beautiful.

The Changsha Meixihu International Culture and Art Centre’s organic architectural language is defined by pedestrian routes that weave through the site to connect with neighbouring streets. Providing views of the adjacent Meixi Lake from the city and giving access to the parks and walking trails on Festival Island, this ensemble of three separate institutions is the largest cultural centre in Hunan province and connects directly with its station on Line 2 of Changsha’s new Metro System.
