ZHA signs agreement to build CITYZEN in Tbilisi, ZHA’s first project in Georgia.

Manuela Gatto, director of Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), joined Mindia Sabanadze, founder of IG Development at a signing ceremony in Tbilisi, Georgia instigating the collaboration to build the CITYZEN mixed-use development in the city.

Located in the centre of Tbilisi at the intersection of Tamarashvili and University streets, the 46,000 m² CITYZEN development will incorporate four residential complexes, a mixed-use tower, as well as an art gallery with community studios and workshops. The entire development with be connected by a pedestrian plaza with landscaped gardens that surround a lake.

"This new project is important for IG Development and also for Georgia as country’s first development designed by Zaha Hadid Architects who have an excellent track-record of collaborating with with local development companies around the world to create innovative projects that set new benchmarks of design and sustainability,” explained Sabanadze.

"We are delighted to be collaborating with CITYZEN to build a new residential and cultural community in Tbilisi. As ZHA’s first project in Georgia, it’s essential to work with a partner who truly understands that architecture can enrich the urban fabric and public realm of the city, and the new construction methods and materials that significantly enhance the environmental performance of each project,” said Gatto.

ZHA is now working with local experts and community in Tbilisi to develop and refine the design for the city. Images and models of the design will be presented at an event in the city later this year.
