Ronald McDonald House, Altona Children’s Hospital, Hamburg, Germany

Zaha Hadid Architects is honoured to be invited to participate in this project for the Ronald McDonald Child Care Foundation; designing a space for children and their parents to live in through a difficult time.

It is an extremely rewarding challenge to create a very special home for children their families. We have developed an inviting space of well-being that accommodates all the requirements of a long-term alternative home for families within very compact spatial requirements of approximately 25m2.

Zaha Hadid Architects have created Apartment 5 of the Ronald McDonald House near the Altona Children’s Hospital. The design features built-in furniture, wooden fittings and recessed lighting to make the space feel larger than it really is. The "two half shells" room concept will have a lower shell base created by wooden flooring and walls that curve up from the ground, and a clean white upper shell of the higher walls and ceiling.

The wooden shell with its continuous curvatures - from the parquet floor to the inbuilt furniture such as bed, seating and desk - lends warmth and a tactile quality to all of the surfaces that can be reached, touched and played-in by the children. The inbuilt furniture and the position of the bed leave the largest possible floor space for the family to sit, play and communicate.
