Messner Mountain Museum Corones wins AIA UK Design Excellence Award 2016

Messner Mountain Museum Corones, South Tyrol, Italy has won the AIA UK Design Excellence Award 2016.

Embedded within the summit of Mount Kronplatz, 2,275m above sea level at the centre South Tyrol’s most popular ski resort, the Messner Mountain Museum Corones is surrounded by alpine peaks. Established by renowned climber Reinhold Messner, the Messner Mountain Museum explores the traditions, history and discipline of mountaineering.

“The idea is that visitors can descend within the mountain to explore its caverns and grottos, before emerging through the mountain wall on the other side, out onto the terrace overhanging the valley far below with spectacular, panoramic views,” explained Zaha Hadid when the mountain museum opened in July 2015.

The members of the AIA UK Design Excellence Award 2016 jury included: Armstrong Yakubu, Charlotte Skene Catling, Michel Mossessian, Alex Lifschutz, Amy Frearson, Frederick Grier and Adrian Evans.

At the awards gala, Frederick Grier, President of the AIA UK, paid tribute to late Dame Zaha Hadid, sharing highlights of her involvement with the AIA UK chapter.

The 2016 Design Excellence Award continues a relationship that extends back to 1995 for the first Design Excellence Awards, held when Zaha Hadid was a jurist. In 2007 on the occasion of the 150th Year celebration of the AIA’s founding  and the 15th Anniversary of the AIA UK Chapter, Zaha Hadid Architects was given the President’s Award by then President Kevin Flanagan AIA in recognition of  the “office’s contribution in promoting excellence in design; as well as past contributions of time to the AIA/UK Chapter and the AIA internationally.” Zaha Hadid remained an Honorary member of the Chapter.
