Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum wins 2013 AIA Michigan Honor Award

The Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA has won a 2013 AIA Michigan Honor Award.

The Broad Art Museum’s formal composition is derived from its context, its stainless steel cladding appears to change constantly with different light and viewing perspectives; echoing the unique topography and circulation routes of the campus. Michigan’s long tradition of skilled manufacturing has delivered a building of the highest material and finish quality.

In their citation, the judges described the museum as: 'A sculptural expression of creativity on a site that works as a gateway to the largely traditionally designed campus.'

Zaha Hadid said: “I am delighted the Broad Art Museum has been acknowledged by AIA Michigan. The connection between culture and public life is critical and the museum’s design encapsulates this concept – engaging the city and university in a collective dialogue where many contributions and innovations feed into each other, allowing talents and ideas to flourish. It's not only a question of how to exhibit the art, but also how, through diversity, we can discover new relationships and connections. The Broad offers many varied gallery conditions to choose from; each with a particular character, creating the most engaging experience for the visitor.”

Almost 80,000 people have visited the Broad Art Museum since it opened in November 2012 – a figure well about projected forecasts.
