London Aquatics Centre shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2014

The London Aquatic Centre has been shortlisted for the 2014 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize.

Since opening to the public in March this year, more than 250,000 people have visited the centre for swimming and diving lessons for all ages and abilities, as well as a variety family and club sessions including water polo, synchronized swimming, diving, triathlon, sub-aqua, gym and dry diving.

The RIBA Jury citation:

Overall this is a very beautiful building; it is sensual in its form with a generosity of space. It works very practically and is well built with very high quality finishes. This is a great building of our times, its pure and powerful form is conceptually flawless; and undoubtedly it will be a favourite venue for Londoners for generations to come.

The RIBA will award the 2014 Stirling Prize at the ceremony in London on 16 October.
