Zaha Hadid exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery to open in December

An exhibition of paintings, drawings, calligraphic designs and digital works by Zaha Hadid will open this December at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. The exhibition explores Zaha’s strength and talent as an artist and calligrapher.

Zaha Hadid’s pioneering vision redefined architecture for the 21st century and captured imaginations across the globe. Her architecture sees form and space pulled into breath-taking fluid spatial progressions. Enticingly contextual, Hadid’s buildings transform notions of what can be achieved in concrete, steel, timber and glass; combining her unwavering optimism for the future and belief in the power of invention with concepts of connectivity and fluidity.

The Serpentine has a long relationship with Hadid, beginning in 1996 when she joined as Trustee of the Gallery. Her first structure in London was the inaugural Serpentine Summer Pavilion, originally built to host the Gallery’s 30th anniversary dinner in July 2000. Designed for just one night, the pavilion proved to be so popular it remained in place for two months and helped to initiate the gallery’s annual summer pavilion program.

Next was the Lilas installation in 2007, followed by the Serpentine Sackler Gallery extension. Hadid converted the Magazine building and further developed the tensile fabric technologies of her previous Serpentine pavilion for the gallery’s event space and cafe. Constructed in 1805 in London’s Kensington Gardens as a gunpowder store during the Napoleonic Wars, Hadid transformed the Magazine building in 2013 into one of London’s most popular spaces for art, attracting artists and architects worldwide to its exhibitions. The gallery’s event space and restaurant, under a flowing canopy supported by sculptural columns crafted in steel, was described by the Sunday Times as “one of the most inspiringly beautiful dining rooms in London, in Europe, in the world.”
