BMW Leipzig Named ‘Best European Plant 2013’

BMW Leipzig has been named the best factory in Europe and overall European Winner of the 2013 Industrial Excellence Award.

Under the patronage of the BDI, the award is presented by two leading business schools INSEAD and WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management to distinguish companies for setting benchmarks within their sector and for European competitiveness. The jury was impressed by the sustainable business model and the consequent implementation of strategy down to each associate at the BMW Leipzig Plant.

Producing a range of BMW models since opening in 2005 including the new ‘i3’electric car, BMW Leipzig Plant’s Central Building by Zaha Hadid Architects is the active nerve-centre of the factory complex where all threads of the building’s activities gather together and branch out.

BMW is committed to creating a dynamic working environment with improved integration of all workers facilitated by connectivity and transparency.  The different floors of the Central Building’s administration departments are connected in a continuous field - while half-finished cars move along their tracks between various production units for all to see - as a constant reminder of the function of the building. This mixture of administrative and production functions avoids the traditional segregation into status groups of blue and white collar workers that is no longer conducive to a modern workplace. The establishment of exclusive domain has been eradicated in favor of a fluid reorganization.
